The West African Examinations Council has appointed Nigerian education administrator Dr Amos Josiah Dangut as its new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer for a five-year tenure.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has appointed Nigerian education administrator Dr Amos Josiah Dangut as its new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, placing him at the helm of the regional examination body for a five-year tenure.

Dangut officially assumed office as the 14th Registrar of WAEC on October 1, 2026, succeeding Alhaji Pateh Bah of The Gambia.

His tenure will run from October 2026 to September 2031.

The appointment was ratified by the WAEC Council, the organisation's international governing board, during its 74th Annual Meeting held in Accra, Ghana, in March 2026.

The appointment was announced in a statement issued by the Head of Public Affairs at WAEC Headquarters, Accra, Demianus G. Ojijeogu. Current reports also confirm that Dangut previously served as Head of WAEC's Nigeria National Office before taking up the regional position.

Dangut's Background

Born on October 2, 1967, Dangut has spent more than two decades working in education, examination administration and assessment.

He obtained a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production in 1991, followed by a Master of Science in Animal Science in 1994.

He later earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Animal Science in 2017 and a Master of Education in Administration and Planning in 2020.

His career in education began in 1994 at St Louis College, Jos, where he worked as a teacher and served as a WAEC examiner.

He joined WAEC in 1998 and subsequently rose through several professional and administrative positions within the organisation.

Career Progression at WAEC

Over the years, Dangut has served in several areas of examination administration, including the Test Development Division in Ogba, Lagos, where he worked as an Assistant Registrar.

He also served in examination security and as Deputy Branch Controller in Uyo and Bauchi before becoming Branch Controller in Yola.

His subsequent responsibilities included serving as Controller of the Post-Examinations Department, Zonal Coordinator in Ikeja and later Deputy Registrar and Head of the Nigeria National Office.

The breadth of these assignments has given him experience across different stages of the examination process, including test development, examination security, administration, post-examination activities and coordination.

Dangut became Head of WAEC's Nigeria National Office in October 2023, a position he held until September 2026.

Focus on Technology and Examination Reform

Dangut's professional record has included a strong emphasis on the use of technology in examination administration.

During his leadership at the Nigeria National Office, WAEC introduced and expanded several technology-driven initiatives aimed at modernising examination processes.

Among the developments associated with his tenure were the rollout of Computer-Based WASSCE, the serialization of examination question papers and the introduction of a Digital Electronic Marking System.

Other digital initiatives included the Digital Certificate Portal, WAEC E-Study Platform, Digital Records Archive, as well as technology-based systems supporting examination logistics and examiner monitoring.

The transition towards computer-based examinations has become an increasingly important part of WAEC's examination strategy. In 2026, Dangut announced the results of the Computer-Based WASSCE for school candidates, with the examination having been conducted between April and June.

Experience in Examination Administration

Beyond technology, Dangut has accumulated extensive experience in the administration and security of examinations.

His responsibilities have included overseeing examination security, coordinating examination branches, managing post-examination processes and supervising operations within major WAEC zones.

His career has therefore covered several critical areas of the examination cycle, from the development of assessment materials to the administration and processing of examination results.

This experience now moves to the regional level as he assumes responsibility for WAEC's wider operations across its member countries.

Recognition and Professional Service

Dangut's professional career has attracted recognition at different stages.

He received commendation from the Nigeria Examinations Committee for his handling of examination matters between 2000 and 2006.

He also received an Award for Meritorious Service from the Ondo State Government during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year.

Beyond his responsibilities within WAEC, Dangut has served on the boards of several educational institutions and organisations.

These include the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB), Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and Grange Educational Foundation.

He has also represented WAEC at the Joint Consultative Committee on Education and the National Council on Education.

Academic and Professional Contributions

Dangut has published academic works in both national and international journals and has presented papers at conferences in the field of education and assessment.

He currently serves as the Regional Representative of the West African sub-region on the Executive Board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa (AEAA).

He is also a Fellow of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN) and a member of the Nigeria Institute of Management (NIM).

A New Responsibility at Regional Level

Dangut's appointment comes after his three-year leadership of WAEC's Nigeria National Office and places him in charge of the Council at a time when examination systems across West Africa are undergoing significant technological changes.

His previous experience in examination administration, digital transformation, assessment development and examination security will form part of the professional background he brings to the regional office.

As Registrar and CEO, he will be responsible for leading the Council's administration and working with its governing structures and member countries throughout his five-year tenure.

What Dangut's Appointment Means for WAEC

The appointment marks another stage in Dangut's long career within the examination system.

From his early work as a teacher and WAEC examiner in Jos to his progression through various administrative positions, his career has remained closely connected to educational assessment and examination management.

His move from the Nigeria National Office to the regional headquarters in Accra also represents a transition from national-level responsibility to leadership of the wider West African examination body.

For WAEC, the coming years are expected to remain focused on examination integrity, technological development, efficient administration and the evolving demands of education across the region.
